How Killer Whales Have Adapted to Survive in the Harsh Seas

Another example of killer whales adapted to their environment is the Southern Right Whales. These whales can grow to an amazing length of about forty feet! They are also incredibly robust, being capable of catching prey much larger than themselves. These killer whales can be seen in the North Pacific, off the coasts of Washington State, and California. In fact, the largest specimen was over twenty eight thousand pounds!

The blue whale is another example of killer whales adapted to their environment. This species only makes a full migration up to twice each year. This is largely due to their diet. Killer whales feed exclusively on fish, and spend almost all of their time at the water’s surface, hunting for their daily meal. Their ability to remain submerged for so long is a highly useful trait, one that they can use to stay away from enemies.

Most killer whales are very slow creatures. They move at the rate of less than a half a mile per hour. This means they can run for hours on end without slowing down. These whales are capable of moving for great distances, which allows them to chase fish thousands of miles from shore. There is even speculation that some species of killer whales may be able to travel to the other side of the world using their sonar.
