Because of the popularity of whales, some countries have started putting laws against the whaling activity. Some countries have even passed a law banning the whaling activity.
People tend to forget that whales are highly social animals. They hunt together and hunt often. If a whale becomes hungry, it will eat its own offspring – same way as how a lion will eat its cubs. They are also capable of protecting their young from being eaten by predators. They have been known to do this by hiding or swimming with other whales until the predators leave them alone.
Because of the way they hunt, whales are considered to be one of the most efficient predator species in the world. They can catch their prey quickly and even bigger than they would ever eat. They have a highly developed sense of smell which makes them able to locate their prey even before the prey shows itself. During this time, the female whale will emit a foamy black colored bubble from her posterior called the amniotic sac. This is used to lure and catch the prey.
However, there is a decline in the whale’s numbers. One reason for this is that there are a lot of offshore oil platforms operating in the area where these animals live. These platforms disturb the food supply of the whales and eventually lead to a decrease in the food supply. Another reason is that overfishing is now common in the area because there has been little growth in the fish population.
Since these whales are considered to be so important to marine life, the government of New Zealand has worked hard in preserving their population. Their tourism industry is also working hard in preventing further damage done to the whales. They work closely with tour operators and others to ensure that tourists are aware of how are beluga whales are endangered. It is hoped that with proper care and protection measures that we can continue to see populations of these majestic creatures and their habitats thrive on land and in the water.
